Bay Art 2008: pottery, paintings, photography
Hans Bauer, Vitrified Existence, clay, Supreme Award.
Kathy Reilly says she wanted to portray her attitude to something topical in her entry for this year's Bay Art. Her striking piece entitled Global H'artichoke...What you sow, so shall you reap, caught the attention of many of the people in the large crowd at last Friday's opening and prize-giving. It also caught the judges' attention, winning first prize in the 2D section of Bay Art 2008.
This year entries are as diverse and impressive as ever. Some brilliant entries were submitted by artists in the under-18 section so it is clear that younger artists are being encouraged to explore and extend their talents.
The winner of this year's supreme award was Parapara potter Hans Bauer.
Hans said he was "over the moon" to win the Supreme Award. "It was amazing that pottery won - maybe for the first time ever."
Hans is always interested in form and texture. "I got the idea from the aggregate in the cliffs at Wharariki and the sand I used came from Parapara, just down the road."
