Fundraising for the Collingwood Playcentre extension got off to a flying start last Thursday when over 50 Golden Bay preschool children met Fairy Anna and Gerry from the Crocodettes at a fairy picnic in the Collingwood Memorial Hall.
The children were entertained by their singing and dancing visitors from Croco Galaxy, and between songs there was face-painting, fairy wand-making and, of course, lots of fairy food.
This was the first event on the fundraising calendar for the Playcentre members who have been told that they must rebuild their kitchen, bathroom and sleeping facilities to comply with new government regulations. Also, since several of their weekly sessions are almost full, they plan to extend the indoor play area, which gets very crowded, particularly on rainy days.
Some funding is available from the National Playcentre Federation but it is up to individual centres to raise at least some of the money. Collingwood is aiming for approximately $40,000 through fundraising events and from various granting bodies.
Centre president Sarah Milligan said, "Although this is a large sum of money, we believe that a Playcentre in the northern part of Golden Bay is essential, and we're committed to this project. Although fundraising is in its early stages, we've been amazed at the generosity of local businesses and individuals who have contributed to the fairy picnic and our other upcoming events."
Gerry and the Crocodettes will be back in Golden Bay on 23 November for a concert at Golden Bay High School. The Crocodettes aim to entertain all age groups, particularly three to seven-year-olds. Tickets will be on sale from Take Note Takaka and the Collingwood Post Office.
