Athletes excel at national level

Two Golden Bay athletes acquitted themselves with distinction on the national scene last week.
Chris Line and Courtney Clarke arrived back from the National Secondary Schools Athletics Championships with sixth and seventh placings in their events.
Competing in the junior boys' javelin and discus events, Chris achieved two sixth placings. He threw personal best distances in both events.
Courtney Clarke finished seventh in the junior girls' discus. Both athletes impressed Golden Bay High School teacher Paul Childs, who accompanied Chris and Courtney to the championships.
"They were competing against the cream of the cream, so both kids did really well. You can't ask for much more than two personal bests in the biggest competition you've ever been in, so Chris can be very proud," said Mr Childs. "In Courtney's event the winner threw a freakish 46 metres. She could be the next Beatrice Faumuina. Courtney has another year in this grade so she can be very pleased too. Look out next year."
