Local artist and school teacher Robin Slow's latest work is being exhibited in Golden Bay and Christchurch.
A collection called Te Ao Marama (the world of light) opened at Gallery Z, on SH 60 one kilometre south of Takaka on December 17.
"The works represent a continuing process of learning and development," said Robin. "They are different. Some people at the opening were a little bit shocked, but I like to think they were shocked in a good way. The piece I really like, Buddha Tiki, is the cheekiest, I suppose. The exhibition is a bit like part of a conversation with another artist."
Robin said that his works were becoming more concerned with a more internal world - personal visions and experiences.
"I suppose they've grown out of things that have happened to me and how I've responded to them," he said.
Robin has for some time used kokowai (traditional red ochre) as his principal painting medium. The current works employ not just this traditional material but also paint from spraycans and different backgrounding techniques and layering he says that he has used a lot more gold leaf too.
The exhibition at Gallery Z (next to Eatery on the Rock) can be viewed Wednesday to Sundays, 3-7pm. Neil Wilson
