Athletics Christmas breakup egg-cellent fun
Local athlete Stacey Johnson.
Stacey Johnson concentrates hard on the egg on her spoon at the Takaka Athletics Club fun night. It marked the club's Christmas breakup. Children of all ages played Frisbee football, had wheelbarrow races and tried their hand at quoits. The size of the turnout was testimony to the club's growth and progress.
President Jim Nalder said that things were really humming.
"We've had coaching nights where experts come over and show the parents how to steer out athletes in the right direction," said Jim. "It really helps if the athletes get accurate, consistent advice. It's showing up in the athletes' performances too. Times and distances are improving all the time."
Mr Nalder said that the Takaka club would be hosting an inter-club event, the Hester shield in February and that he expected Golden Bay athletes to continue giving a good account of themselves at provincial level. "We surprised a few people with our successes last season but we're not the surprise package any more," he said. "The other clubs know we're a serious threat now."
