Abel Tasman a special focus for Live Poets in November
Live Poets will focus on special Tasman District commemorations during our November gathering at the Mussel Inn.
This year brings the 350th anniversary of Abel Tasman’s death (October 1659), and the 367th anniversary (18/19 December) of his anchoring in 1642 in Mohua now known as Golden Bay. Not only was that the earliest recorded meeting between Maori and people from another culture, it literally put Aotearoa on a map. These are significant dates for New Zealand’s shared history, dates that are also being celebrated in the Netherlands. Our council is encouraging community groups to reflect on the anniversaries of its namesake and to find appropriate ways of marking them.
On 26 November (from 8pm) Live Poets will commemorate Abel Tasman, the significance of his visit, and of any first meetings between strangers.
This will be another special Live Poets evening. Readings and other contributions from our very creative community reflecting the heritage story, what it means to be a stranger in a new land, or to be visited by strangers are invited.
As always, local and visiting contributors on other topics and our audience are most welcome, too.
