Bay Art “healthy art scene that wasn’t scared of pushing the boundaries”
Rangihaeata (by Emma Lay - 1st 2D and Supreme Award)
Fibre, photos, 2D, 3D and miniature 3D were again the main categories for the twenty-fourth Bay Art, which opened with the prize presentation last Friday evening.
The Supreme Award went jointly to Emma Lay for her charcoal on paper Rangihaeata, and to the trio of artists Nicola Basham, Hazel Pearson and Julia Kelswell for their combined creation Go Willow, a coffin made from willow branches.
Puponga resident James Watkins took the photography prize for his evocative Knowledge of Stillness.
Two of the highly commended awards that were given out went to Stillife of a Wallpaper in Red by Guy Nicholls, and The Land of Cats and Wolves, a painting by 7-year-old Niwa Jongkind.
Arts worker Lynne Udell said the whole process of setting up the exhibition and judging all went quite smoothly with around a dozen people coming in the previous day to help.
The three over-the-Hill judges (Anne Rush, Mike Tasman-Jones and Graeme Cornwell) spent around two hours on the Friday morning looking around the 114 works, then spent another hour deliberating. Says Lynne: “They were impressed with our healthy art scene that wasn’t scared of pushing the boundaries. They also thought it noteworthy to see children involved.”
Bay Art 2009 is on 10am-4pm daily at the High School hall until Sunday 1 November.
