The Golden Bay branch of St John hosted a regional awards ceremony a fortnight ago and, along with volunteers from across the region, its members were recognised for long service and updated qualifications.
John White, the chairman of the Nelson/Marlborough district of St John said that the Golden Bay branch had “wonderful people who deserved the honour and prestige they got at the ceremony.”
“They’ve given that time to their community freely,” he said. “On top of the on-duty time, they’ve done the training to get the qualifications to make them even more effective.”
“A big thank you has to go out the volunteers’ families too,” said Mr White. “Everyone makes a sacrifice when someone volunteers for this kind of work. You’re an isolated community over there and each time there’s an ambulance call it touches a lot of people. That makes the work very personal for our volunteers.”
