Exactly 84 plaster casts of Golden Bay women’s breasts were made in time to be hung in the Put Your Best Breast Forward exhibition at Lollokiki’s White Room gallery in Takaka.
For exhibition creator and organiser Billy Kerrisk, the final stage of putting them up was an overpowering experience.
“Just seeing them all together, covering the wall, expressing so much sisterhood. All the effort was just so worth it.”
Not all of the anonymous breasts represented are complete, more than a few revealing mastectomies that have been performed.
Billy said that Nelson surgeon Ros Pochin had been an inspiration to her while she was getting the whole exhibition together. “Her message strong and clear was that breast screening may be the best tool women have, but general self-awareness about their boobs is absolutely crucial. It was also amazing how many local people helped me. Thanks to everyone who made all this possible.”
Put Your Best Breast Forward runs until Sunday 15 November. Admission is free. Casts must be collected from Lollokiki 16 or 17 November, 11am-4pm. Donations received will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
