One rule for all
At the recent TDC tourism meeting held on 27 October, among issues discussed was the TDC marketing strategy. In a  “one-on-one” discussion with Paul Davis I raised the tourism targeted rate. The criteria for this rate was, and I quote from paragraph 24 of the Funding Impact Statement, 2009/2010...”all ratable properties within the Tasman District that are used for accommodation purposes..” Mr Davis mentioned that some 400 properties that are used as holiday rentals have been excluded from this rate.
For those of us who are operating accommodation properties and paying this rate, is this a fair and level playing field? Surely holiday rental accommodation falls inside the criteria? Would the estimated extra $54,000 help the marketing budget? The real issue is “one rule for all“.

Search and Rescue
Golden Bay Search and Rescue has now been operating for 50 years. We will be celebrating this milestone on Saturday 21 November. We have been in touch with as many past members as we can, but should you have slipped through the net, please get in touch and come and join us.
We now have over 30 active members, but the group has seen over 200 during the past 50 years. We have had some sad times, but many more successful ones – remember Le Fleming? We have gathered photos and newspaper articles of past searches, but any more would be gratefully received.  Come and see our displays, see what we are up to now, but more importantly come and catch up with “old” friends.
For more information please contact me on 524 8389 or <gjpomeroy@xtra.co.nz>.

Golden Bay Santa Parade confirmed

The Golden Bay Santa Parade will be held on Saturday 19 December, 10am to noon. We’re looking forward to a good turnout of collectable cars, trucks and tractors, decorated bicycles and costumes. Last year was very encouraging considering the weather, so let’s hope for a fine day so Santa doesn’t get a chill.
Further information will appear in The GB Weekly up to the event but contact me if you have ideas, floats or would like to help: 525 8876 or recreation@gbcw.co.nz

Joan Whiting Rest Home
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and this is especially so when the health and welfare of our community is at stake. We are lucky to live in a community where people feel passionate about local issues; however informed decisions can only be made when there is transparency from all parties. The Joan Whiting Trust is passionate about the care and welfare of our elderly (who could all too soon be ourselves) and we are openly and honestly negotiating towards a rest home solution which fully respects the needs of the frail elderly in Golden Bay, now and in the future.
As a Joan Whiting trustee I can assure you that we are thoroughly researching all the options presented and I suggest that we all reserve judgement until we are fully informed.

A big thank you to all the women who attended the Women’s Health Hui last Friday and to all the wonderful helpers. It was a great success and we are now planning the next one.
