Cycle and walking encouraged on Great Expectations track
Fleur, Lani, Jamal, Neil and Anya Murray have a family day out.
The newly opened Rameka track, called Great Expectations, is well over two kilometres long and is the first stage of the Rameka Project. Here some excerpts from the speech made by Chairman Ricky Ward at its opening.
“When we were marking out the different sections of Great Expectations, we were looking at the line, angles and something called grade reversals - something that makes a good track even better. We could also see the ‘wow’ factor in the terrain, views and the trees that would be incorporated into the track.
“This ‘wow’ factor has also extended to all the people who have helped in building the track. It has been fantastic to be involved with the working bees.
“What is also fantastic is the number of people from the community who aren’t official “members of the project” yet who’ve been adding their bit to the track.
“Although I’ve walked, run and ridden up and down Great Expectations and found that awesome, the most pleasure and reward I get from the track is sharing it with others.
“From here, we aim to continue Great Expectations (part 2) down to the creek and out of the valley.
“Also, a more technical track, called The Odyssey, has been flagged out to eventually join up with Great Expectations. And of course, in time, other tracks will be incorporated into the project.
“I’m sure that Great Expectations enhances the experience offered by the tracks up at Canaan and the Rameka itself. It’s also a fantastic experience in its own right. Please bike it, walk it, run it and enjoy it.”
