Rugby club organisers were pleased with the results of their latest hunting and fishing competition.
Held last weekend in weather that was partly too wet and partly too sunny, the event was a fundraiser for the Takaka senior team’s pre-season trip to Australia.
“We like to raise funds by offering people something that they can enjoy, rather than just asking for donations all the time,” said spokesman Brian Harris. “The players appreciate the money they raise if there’s a bit of hard work for them in it too.”
The competition produced plenty of pigs, despite the inclement weather on Friday and Saturday. The weather improved sufficiently for some excellent fish to be caught as well. The winning snapper, a 10.78 kg whopper, was caught by Chris Weir. Strangely, Chris was a little bit vague about the spot where he caught the big fish.
“Out there in the Bay,” was all he was prepared to divulge.
Stacey Sixtus had a very successful day’s fishing. She won a prize fro the second-biggest snapper (7.72kg) and the biggest finfish prize for her 13.45kg grey shark. Both fish were caught using squid bait, and Stacey credited her success to some “special sparkly hooks” she had used.
