Television personality Pio Terei was in Golden Bay this week to film an episode of his show Tangaroa.
The show, now in its fifth series, screens on Maori TV and documents the relationships between people and the sea.
"Tangaroa is the god of the sea. If you have an ongoing relationship with the sea for your livelihood or just to feed your whanau, we're interested in you," said Pio.
The Tangaroa team went out with Hika and Winston Rountree. They visited the mussel spat facility at Wainui Bay, saw scallops and crabs being caught, and harvested some Golden Bay mussels. Later they enjoyed a feast of the day's catch at the Penguin Café and Bar in Pohara.
Describing his day with the Rountrees and the other Golden Bay folk as "just above perfect", Pio said that he was enjoying being part of the Maori TV success story and its part in building bridges between people.
"I believe that in 20 or 30 years' time Aotearoa will be the envy of the world because of what we're accomplishing in race relations," he said. "The future's very bright. The negative stuff is just a result of lack of knowledge and fear of the unknown."
The Golden Bay episode of Tangaroa will screen later in the year and The GB Weekly will do its best to let readers know in advance.
