Blues Awards nominee Eric Bibb to perform
Leading American acoustic bluesman Eric Bibb is about to thrill audiences at the Mussel Inn with his deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel-infused folk-blues.
The singer/songwriter melds a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility, and has made multiple albums and international tours. He co-founded Britain’s Manhaton Records, and his band has played at most of the world’s major festivals, including Glastonbury and the Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK. He joined Robert Cray on two US tours in 2001 and 2002 and opened for Ray Charles in the summer of 2002.
His father, Leon Bibb, is a singer in musical theatre who made a name for himself as part of the 1960s New York folk scene. Eric was born in New York, the godson of Paul Robeson and nephew to Modern Jazz Quartet founder John Lewis, and was given his first steel-string acoustic guitar aged seven. Growing up surrounded by talent, he recalls a childhood conversation with Bob Dylan, who, on the subject of guitar playing, advised the 11-year-old Eric to “keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff”.
One critic wrote: “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues”.
He will be performing at the Mussel Inn on Wednesday 4 March at 9pm. $18.
