Council business
Engineering services committee
Items for consideration at the next meeting of the engineering services committee on Thursday 14 May:
Bridge maintenance. TDC transportation manager Gary Clark’s report informs the committee that the Cobb Power Station bridge requires steel beams cleaned and painted as well as several bearing plates replaced. This is work in progress.
Montgomery Watson Harza is preparing a report on the estimated price for replacement of the tower of the Salisbury swing bridge.
Car parks. The Motupipi Street car park is programmed for resurfacing. It has had the entrance laneway surfaced in asphalt and the parking area chip-sealed. Council has earmarked the adjacent land that Waitapu Engineering previously occupied for extending the existing car park. The reseal will extend the life of the pavement until the new car park is developed, enabling the entire car park to be surfaced with one homogenous surface. The proposed enlarged carpark has been redesigned to increase the number of car parks, and improve the layout.
Riparian/river management. Crack willow will continue to be removed from rivers as funds allow. This process is expected to take some time under the current river rating scheme.
Gravel relocation works. TDC intends to work in a dry section of the Takaka River when the river level drops, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
Rivers, streams, creeks and drains. Fletcher Vautier Moore has met with environment and planning to discuss implications of how to define rivers, streams, creeks and drains in Part IV of the TRMP.
Waste minimisation in New Zealand. TDC utilities asset engineer David Stephenson’s report seeks approval from the committee to make a submission to the Ministry for the Environment, responding to the document “Waste Minimisation in New Zealand”.
Collingwood stormwater upgrade. Council staff met with local residents and two members of the community board in late April to discuss the project in Gibbs Road. Tenders for the work were advertised on 18 April and close on 13 May.
Resource recovery centres. TDC utilities manager Jeff Cuthbertson has reported that waste volumes at the Takaka site continue to grow steadily, with a 6% growth for the quarter and 9% for the year to date. Construction of a shed and installation of power at the lower level is complete. Contractors are extending the reuse shop on the upper level. Recent changes to the sale of reusable material appear to be going well, with only minor issues. Waste volumes in Collingwood continue to reduce substantially, with tonnages reducing 16% over the quarter and 14% on the year to date. Recycling at this site continues to be popular and may be having an impact on waste quantities. Recent site works include installation of a telephone line, which will increase security at the site, and add the potential to monitor this site out of hours.
Full council
The council listened to verbal presentations by submitters in Takaka on Monday this week on the Draft 2009–2019 Long Term Council Community Plan. The GB Weekly will provide a summary of submissions to the plan in next week’s issue.
