A green new deal for Aotearoa?
Green Party MP Kevin Hague is hosting a “Green New Deal” public meeting at the Community Centre on Sunday evening, 17 May.
“The Green MPs are working on how to solve the twin crises of economic recession and climate change/environmental collapse,” Kevin said. “It’s completely within our reach to create more jobs, address the climate crisis as well as the economic crisis, and strengthen the economy.”
Mr Hague noted that governments worldwide are responding to the recession with practical, realistic ideas that recognise that the economy and the environment go hand in hand. Green New Deal packages have been announced in the US, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Australia, Korea, China, and Mexico. “New Zealand is lagging behind, and our future, and that of our children, depends on us acting on this issue now before it gets any worse.”
Mr Hague said that the Greens will shortly launch some proposals for a Green New Deal in New Zealand. He is keen to discuss these with community members and hear good local ideas about how they could be improved and expanded into nationwide programmes.
He invites you to share your views at the public meeting, which starts at 7pm.

Riordan brothers battle for GB Open title
Sean Riordan made it two years out of three when he won the Golden Bay Open last weekend, in a streak only interrupted by brother Blair in 2007.
The two brothers were in the final grouping on Sunday to battle for the best two-day gross total.
After day one, Sean had equalled the course record he achieved at last year’s Open, of 61, after missing his final birdie putt (which would have been his 11th birdie) by a few centimetres. His Sunday score of 69 was good enough to achieve a win by 5 strokes, with a combined total of 130.
Sean is playing in one more event, in Tauranga, before heading to Britain for a number of top amateur events in a couple of weeks’ time.
Blair’s consolation prize is making the New Zealand Golf Srixon development squad. He failed to fire on Sunday, but some of the other Nelson top players put together some classy totals. Greenacres pro Jordan Dasler finished second on 135 (70, 65) and Nelson pro Glyn Delany scored 144 (71, 73).
Top woman player Lisa Wright struggled around the greens on Sunday, scoring 76, to add to her 73 on Saturday to take out the top female title on 149, three shots clear of Jamie Lee Moses on 152.
Best intermediate performer was Takaka local Leon Schrader, one of the 10 Nelson academy players. Leon, who plays off 11, had gross scores of 77 and 76.
The field of 133 players played in dry conditions both days. Unlike last year when there were holes in one both days, no one achieved the perfect score, though Takaka intermediate Jason Arnst’s shot into the 7th green on Sunday sat on the lip of the hole.
Well-loved actress delivers another show of wit and song
Actress Helen Moulder is to visit Golden Bay again with another of her touring shows. It’s eight months since she brought The Legend Returns to the Takaka Playhouse and two years since Playing Miss Havisham came to the area. This time it’s her new play, A Vote for Cynthia – the Musical.
A Vote for Cynthia – the Musical uses the same character of Cynthia Fortitude from The Legend Returns.
“Cynthia wants to retire from opera singing and become Prime Minister,” says Helen, “so she’s launching a new political party with a lot of rather improbable policies, mainly to do with music of course. It’s pretty ridiculous and very funny.”
Helen developed the character of Cynthia Fortitude 20 years ago in the women’s comedy troupe Hens’ Teeth. “Face the Future with Fortitude” is the slogan for Cynthia’s party, and the show promises an evening of wit, laughter and song.
“Cynthia Fortitude’s true genius and Helen Moulder’s excellence as a performer is such that we are uniformly delighted to join her in song. ” - Thomas La Hood, Theatreview.
“Helen Moulder’s determined, dotty and totally delightful Cynthia. She has created an unbeatable gem of a comic character.” Laurie Atkinson, Dominion Post.
Performances: Sunday 24 May, 4pm, Bainham Hall. Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 May, 7.30pm, The Playhouse. Ticket details are on page 23.
