Camping and katipo for Kiwi Conservation Club
A group of KCC kids gathered around as Chris Pomeroy examines a Katipo spider.
On Saturday night 21 kids and 14 adults camped at the lighthouse near the end of Farewell Spit. This was a Kiwi Conservation Club trip, organised by Debbie Jones.
They travelled out to the end of the spit with Farewell Spit Nature Experience. Their guide and driver was owner-operator Chris Pomeroy, nicknamed “The Crocodile Hunter” after he found deadly katipo spiders under pieces of flotsam lying on the beach.
A guided tour of the extensive museum preceded a shared dinner and a long game of spotlight beneath the giant lighthouse lights. The glow of the Maui gas field platforms could be seen from the top of the lighthouse far off on the seaward horizon. Next morning, the group walked around the end of the spit, collecting rubbish on the way, then enjoyed lunch and a tumble on the sand dunes on the way home.
The happy campers expressed their gratitude to DOC, KCC, the parent helpers and Chris Pomeroy from Farewell Spit Nature Experience for their great weekend at the end of the world.
