Local riders dominate Barrons Flat MTB Challenge

Seventeen riders took up the Barrons Flat Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday 24 May, with local riders dominating throughout the hilly 30km course.
In the open section Seamus Ryan (Takaka) rode to a confident win over Paul Michell (Takaka). Fifteen-year-old Ari Kingan (Takaka) rode strongly and displayed class with style, taking third place and a well-deserved Rider of the Day award.
A strong ride saw Glenda Allinson (Takaka) first in the women’s section, followed by Amy Jones (Chch), with third equal going to Corina Ward, Marie Langley and Rita Langley (all Takaka). Youngest rider at 12 years of age went to the hard-riding Oscar Ralph-Michell. We thank the Harwood family for access through their land.
The next event on Sunday 7 June, we have the Cobb Challenge, 7 plus hours of hills and mud that is suitable for experienced riders with a high level of fitness only. Jacket, food, lights and survival blanket are a must. There will be a shorter 4-hour social race for all levels of ability. Riders are to assemble at the Waitui Turnoff, Upper Takaka from 8.45am for a 9am start. More information, Paul on 525 7337.
