Sponsors treated to great rugby
The Takaka under-16 rugby team won last weekend’s game 26-0.
Sponsors of the Takaka Rugby Football Club were treated to hospitality and some very good rugby last Saturday.
Sponsors’ Day gave the club the chance to say give their sponsors some recognition and to acknowledge the importance in of their role in the club’s administration.
In one of the early games, the Takaka under-16 side reversed their early season form in comprehensively outplaying a Nelson College team. The visitors had a right to expect to enjoy their trip to Takaka, having beaten the locals by 60 points when they last met. Takaka, now a much-improved and more-organised side, won this home encounter 26-0.
The Takaka under-14 team also enjoyed success in a high-scoring encounter with Garin College. The victory was virtually sealed in the first half but Garin came back in the second half and the Takaka boys had to call on all their discipline, teamwork and fitness to prevail by 38 to 34.
The success of the junior teams in the curtain-raisers gave the growing crowd high expectations for the main game between the Takaka seniors and the visiting Huia team. Huia were second in the competition and Takaka had to win just to retain their place in the top half of the Senior B competition. A cohesive and committed effort by Takaka’s forwards meant that Huia seldom threatened Takaka’s composure and their victory was beyond doubt by mid-way through the second spell, when Takaka were leading by 18 points. The momentum and control achieved by the Takaka forwards meant that their backline had good ball to play with and they made very good use of it, running in five tries in a convincing 35-0 victory. Coach Brian Harris made judicious use of substitutions, ensuring that Takaka maintained the momentum and domination they had built up.
A sponsor, Fred Jenkins of GB Mechanical, enjoyed his day.
“We like to support the club because of what it does for the community. It was a nice way to get us together and say thanks.”
