The budget decision to cut the funding for Adult and Community Education continues to attract local opposition.
Golden Bay High School’s ACE co-ordinator, Clare Harvey-Smith, and evening class tutor Margy Meys have been gathering signatures for a nationwide petition asking the Government to reconsider the decision.
“When the Government is giving tens of millions of dollars’ worth of extra funding to private schools, it seems very mean to cut off the funding for adult and community education that’s accessible to everybody,” said Clare.
“We’ve heard that SeniorNet and night classes are under threat from this funding cut,” said Margy. “The Government says we can afford a nationwide cycleway but not community education. I’m a cyclist and even I think they’ve got their priorities wrong.”
