The Golden Bay Youth Council celebrated Youth Week in style with last Saturday’s skate and BMX competition at the Takaka skatepark.
Contestants came from all over the region to compete for prizes and show their skills, and the event drew a good-sized crowd of spectators.
Youth Council members had the guidance and support of Youth Council co-ordinator Abbie Stephens and recreation co-ordinator Dave Myall in organising the event.
“The Youth Council people are doing a great job,” said Abbie. “They’re learning about the finer details of organising events. Important things like communicating clearly, committing to what we’ve said we’re going to do and co-operating with others. They’re lifelong skills.
“Each area’s Youth Council in the Tasman District is responsible for producing one issue of the Jam magazine. We have to do the summer issue, so that’s another big job to look forward to. It’s going to be a pretty steep learning curve, but it’ll be lots of fun.”
Youth Council members said that they were enjoying organising things for the Bay’s young people.
“There’s not much for young people to do. If we provide activities and events, maybe our young people will be less likely to get involved in less constructive things,” said Youth Council member Lola Clouston.
