GBHS production, Another Spring

Another Spring will run Thursday 11 until Saturday 13 June.

Golden Bay High School will present the New Zealand premiere of the play Another Spring next week.
The play was written in 1999 by the school’s present head of department in English, Jim Barnes, and originally performed by students of the high school in the small town of Moffat, Colorado.
“That first season left me a little unsatisfied,” said Mr Barnes. “When I agreed to direct the senior production here at Golden Bay High this year, I considered lots of options but Another Spring seemed a good idea. I gave it a thorough revision, adding characters and rewriting several sections for this time and place; and now it’s ready for Golden Bay audiences to enjoy.”
Mr Barnes said that his play would give Golden Bay kids the opportunity to act in a drama that required them to develop characters with real depth. “The characters require emotional interpretation,” he said.
The production involves dance as well as straight drama, and Mr Barnes said he liked the way it involved the audience.
“I like to break down that fourth wall between the performers and the audience,” he said. “The audience should take away some interesting ideas about our relationships with each other, with society generally and with the Earth.”
The student performers said they were enjoying the extracurricular opportunities offered by the production. They were also looking forward to the play’s season, which opens on Thursday 11 June and continues on Friday 12 June and Saturday 13 June at 7.30pm in the school hall.
