Gibbs Road track improvements appreciated by residents

Thanks were given this week to TDC, Coast Care and Stream Care by the team making improvements around Collingwood’s historic settlers’ cemetery in Orion Street.
It’s five years since Robyn Jones and Penny Griffith presented a proposal to the Golden Bay Community Board for the improvement of signage and pedestrian access to the community’s most significant European heritage site.
The adjacent road is also a route used by Collingwood Area School students going to and from the village.
Last week, contractors finished laying the new seal on what is affectionately known as “the Gibbs Road track”, joining two unconnected parts of formed road. Still to come are a handrail, a light, and a seat halfway up the steep path for those who get puffed.
“I can hardly believe it,” said Robyn. “It’s been a long process, as the signs were installed over three years ago. It’s great to have such a good surface to walk on, and the new drainage will be much better.”
Part of the original bargain was that locals would do the planting and weed control on the local walking tracks, and on Sunday enthusiastic Gibbs Road residents planted donated grasses on the bund alongside the stormwater drain.
