Do you think that Golden Bay should have its own marine management plan so that our resources can be sustainably managed by people who live and work here?

  1. A Fisher says "The commercial fish people would have to be involved, but there is an argument for local management. We could decide on areas where trawling and dredging were never allowed and have local size and bag limit regulations. Being part of the management group shouldn't be just voluntary work, though."

  2. Alan Vaughan says "The Ministry of Fisheries has establish a fisheries plan advisory group to research and develop a comprehensive plan for sustainably managing all the quota fish species in the Challenger area (FMA7). The plan does call for a mechanism that will allow separate "local" plans for discreet areas (such as the questionaire envisages),in Golden Bay. I am a member of that advisory group and can report that the plan is just about complete. In order for there to be separate management plans, there will have to be an amendment to the Fisheries Act 1996 which currently has no mechanism to allow separate plans. Assuming the Minister accepts the new plan it will take time to pass such an amendment to the Act. Any management regime must allow for both recreational and commercial interestest to be considered and provided for in some measure. Alan Vaughan(member CIFF FPAG)"

We need better managment of our rivers creeks swamps and estaurys these are the oragans of the ocean and if these are cleaned up and unpoulleted the Bay will bennift immensely. "
