Referendum
Vote no. We do not want parents to be criminalised because they correct their children, whether with a time out or a smack. Address the real issues of child abuse like gambling, alcohol, drugs, depression, financial pressures, work pressures and all the other things that draw a family apart and cause friction. While this referendum is costing so much money, that was the Government’s choice to hold it separately from the main election, but nevertheless, let your voice now be heard and at least vote to let the Government know how you feel about this issue. You can’t complain about the outcome if you don’t vote.
Vote no, vote no, vote no, vote no.

Integrated Health Group
The questions put to the Integrated Health Group (GBW 7/8) aren’t the only ones I’d like answers to about this proposed new health project.
I’d like to know why the whole business has been conducted in near-total secrecy by the Integrated Health Group for months on end despite their assurances of “community consultation”. I haven’t seen any signs of consultation barring a few scattered preliminary meetings years ago.
I’d like to know why the public hasn’t been informed about the financial implications of the business plans drawn up by the group. What’s the problem in letting us know what various alternatives cost? Who will be paying?
I’d also like to know if it’s true they’re talking about a CEO to head up the new “charitable organisation”. Is it true her or his salary is going to cost $120,000 to $200,000 a year (or more). If that’s not true, then how much? Oh, commercial confidentiality? Yeah, right!
Finally when will we, the people of Golden Bay get a say – and I mean a real say, not just a few stage-managed meetings where the public get to make a few points and this self-appointed new trust goes away and implements what it’s already decided behind closed doors?

Alzheimers recent appeal
We hope that many of your readers enjoyed a cup of tea on our society when they donated at our recent appeal and awareness week, and we were giving away tea bags to highlight our cause.
With the help of 50 volunteers, a total of $4,038 was raised across the region with a staggering $989.80 from within Golden Bay. We’ve been asked whether or not our funds will be used locally. The answer is yes - all 100% of it. We receive 20% of our annual outgoings from the District Health Board and around 20% from the likes of Lottery and Canterbury Community Trust - so we really do rely on the extra donations from the public. We are a small not-for-profit group that has been working diligently across the region for 25 years, supported by a small staff and over 40 volunteers donating 700 hours per month. Thank you to the many people who supported our raffle and made donations; you have made a real difference to our organisation.
