50th Mini celebrations include visit to the Bay
Some mostly mint Minis. Many Minis will make their way over Marble Mountain this month.
Golden Bay could be in for a Mini invasion later this month.
Organisers of the Mini’s 50th birthday celebrations, the Mini Car Club in Nelson, are planning a run over the Marble Mountain and as many as 200 of the classic cars could be involved. The party runs from 24 to 30 August and the run to Golden Bay is planned for Tuesday 25.
“Probably the main public event will be the showing of all cars on Saturday 29 August at the ENZA packhouse complex at the Richmond end of Nayland Road,” said Paul Davies, the organising task force representative. “We’re planning the event to cater for 200-plus cars and with the numbers of early registrations, these figures are not impossible. With interest already shown from overseas, this has truly become an international affair. It’ll probably be the biggest Mini event ever held in New Zealand.”
Mr Davies said that the party was set to appeal to car enthusiasts who wanted to avoid the formality of a national show and competition.
“The celebrations are open to all Mini owners, regardless of make, model or condition of their vehicle. It’s not limited to club members only. With the Mini now enjoying a cult-like status, we’re expecting large crowds, as well large numbers of participants. Everyone out there has a Mini memory of some kind. What other car out there is as recognisable as the Mini?”
Mr Davies said that anyone wishing to be part of the Mini Party should contact the committee on 03 547 9170. Any profit will be shared with the Nelson Hospice.
