Friends of Golden Bay
Well done Hika Rountree (GBW Letters 8/1) on an excellent “call to account”. I think we have a situation where the esteemed members of Friends of Golden Bay have made their niche in their respective communities and are unwilling to let any newcomer or new enterprise interfere with it. “Thanks but no thanks.”
The figure quoted of 81 persons surely does not truly represent the feeling of the rest of this wonderful community we live in. I have watched with interest in some of the projects this group has been involved with and the same dedicated few, maybe four or five people are the only ones doing anything constructive, but the rest are very vocal in condemning anything else that could only but enhance and encourage any new venture in Golden Bay.

Golden Bay would be quite different today if it were not for the phenomenal dedication of The Friends of Golden Bay who were able to stop a seven-kilometre mussel farm planned inappropriately close to our beaches. Alan Vaughan and other Friends have spent vast energy protecting Golden Bay from exploitation that would have detrimental effects on Golden Bay. The bitter voice attacking this group is unfounded.
Noise is another form of pollution and we should note that GB Promotions surveys all show that our visitors largely enjoy the peace and quiet of Golden Bay. Hopefully any development of helicopter activity in the Bay will be minimal so that we keep our enviable reputation.

Matthew, one day your children’s children will appreciate this sacred earth they inherit. They will be grateful for the honesty, integrity and selflessness of these good people. Don’t be afraid, Matthew, these people are there to help you too. Love and peace,

The White Room
What a truly international lot we are over summer! Many thanks to everyone who mapped out their Journey to The White Room. Now, towards the end of the installation, it’s a tangled web of chaos from just about every part of the globe. Wonderful! A special thanks to Philly at Monza who kindly donated beautiful coloured string to document the journeys. We just kept running out! Thanks again to all.

Village Theatre Book Fair

At The Village Theatre, we had a fantastic fundraising Book Fair at the beginning of the month. A big thank you to all those who contributed books throughout the year, helped to run the fair on the day, and especially to those who came along and bought some of the great bargains. Over $1,700 was raised for the theatre.

Rototai Organic Community Stall
The good news for 2010 is that on New Year’s Day, we, on behalf of the community, launched Golden Bay’s Organic Community Stall on Rototai Road.
There has been talk of feeding the Bay for a year or two. This stall has a great part to play in doing that. We two are managing the stall but it belongs to no one. The ownership goes out to all in the Bay, the broader community. The character of our stall is purely down to earth and unique to New Zealand. We can encourage and assist other roadside stalls in the Bay.
If you are homegrowing organic food with green fingers, love and connection, and have any surplus, please share amongst us by ringing 525 9393 to organise pick-up.  Anyone can sell (on consignment), buy or swap. Both $kiwi and full HANDS are paid to suppliers and accepted. Many fruits, vegetables and berries are coming into season and much can be made into other fine products. We offer recipes, herbs and much more. The stall is open 24/7 and staffed during the day to share whatever the community offers. To find out more just check our website <www.communitystall.co.nz>.

Thank you

Recently I had a fall in the Westpac bank and I wanted to say a thank you for all the great help I received. There were two off-duty St John people in the bank who looked after me until the ambulance came. They are of course so very good; one I knew quite well. One of my neighbours offered and drove my car home. Then there were the wonderful people at the Golden Bay Medical Centre. Also help from a wonderful neighbour and other good friends. We are truly blessed to live in such a caring community. Thanks to you all.
