A little bit of spring weather shows its head and suddenly there’s plenty going on in the Bay.
Labour Weekend is the traditional starting point for the summer season and lots of local organisations take the chance to share their activities with visitors and locals with some spare time over the long weekend. Here is a selection of special events The GB Weekly knows about. Further details in this issue.
Bay Art kicks off at 6pm on Friday with its grand opening and prizegiving in the Golden Bay High School hall. It is open every day after that between 10am and 4pm until the end of the month. An exciting innovation sees a new exhibition specifically for young people called Young At Art.
Beauty of the Beasties, an exhibition of Philly Hall’s latest work, is now showing at MONZA Gallery in Commercial Street.
Put Your Best Breast Forward, the collection of plaster casts, decorated as well as unadorned and contributed by local women is on display at The White Room in Lollokiki Gallery. With the support of Rural Women, the event has become a nationwide fund-raiser for breast cancer awareness.
The Marble Mountain Music Club welcomes visitors to their get-together on Sunday at the Senior Citizens’ Clubrooms in Takaka. The theme this time is “animal song” and the meeting kicks off at the new time for summer, 7.30pm.
The Annual Quilt Show is on once again at the Collingwood Memorial Hall. It will feature working demonstrations by members of the quilting group, a display and demonstration by the Nelson Bernina shop and the usual sales table and quilt raffle.
Collingwood’s Sealord Fireworks will again light up the night sky over the Bay. The title of this year’s show is The Night of the Taniwha and it is scheduled for 9.30pm on Saturday night. The show is run by Fizz Gig and is a fund-raiser for the Collingwood Fire Brigade. If bad weather intervenes, the fireworks will happen on the Sunday or Monday night.
The Aorere Centre in Tasman Street Collingwood has a special display called Grandmother’s Sewing Box.
The Patons Rock Vintage Machinery And Steam Museum is open on Saturday. It will have steam machinery in action. “Come along and enjoy the atmosphere,” says Harry Holmwood.
A Gong Concert will take place on the full moon at Winema, 196 Glenview Road. Saturday, beginning at 7pm. “Come and join us in this relaxing, healing and introspective experience,” say organisers Willie and Marius. Bookings essential. Ph 525 7977.
The Rockville Museum has its perennially popular Steam-up Day on Sunday between 10am and 3pm. The day will feature a display of early settlers’ machinery and household treasures. There will also be hand-milking, milk-separating and butter-making demonstrations.
The Motupipi Hall Book Fair and Collectors’ Display starts on Saturday at 10am. Collectors wishing to display to display their collections should contact Megan Nalder on 525 8064 to discuss arrangements. There will be also be a produce table and a sausage sizzle.
The Takaka Village Summer Market returns to the Library car park on Saturday from 9am-1.30pm. From now on the market will be a weekly event.
