The Bay’s latest cycling event promises to be “very sociable and lots of fun” according to organisers, Mandy Richards and Abbey Gilligan. The Frocks on Bikes ride will take place at 10am on Sunday 17 October. The route is from Takaka’s Village Green to Pohara via the new walk/cycleway adjacent to the golf course.
“Frocks on Bikes shows biking to be stylish, safe, sustainable, streetwise and street-savvy,” says Abbey.
“It’s first and foremost for women, but we’d love to have some supportive men along too. The idea is that anything in your wardrobe can be cyclewear. It’s fabulous ro go biking in everyday clothes. The event is for all ages, all shapes and all sizes. We want to send the message about being courteous to all road users—whether they have no wheels, two wheels or four wheels.”
Frocks on Bikes began in the lead-up to the 350 Climate Action Festivals in Auckland and Wellington, but events are now found throughout Aotearoa, says Abbey. The movement’s intention is to highlight the need for better cycling routes - for environmental, health, recreational and economic reasons.
The local event will end up at the Totally Roasted Cafe for “well-earned lamingtons”, but Abbey and Mandy say they also have a few nice surprises planned along the way. Participants can either ride home after the event or take advantage of the shuttle provided by the organisers.
