Correspondence success

Christopher Clarke of Year 7 recently attended the Te Kura/The Correspondence School end-of-year prize giving in Wellington.
   He received the  Ruby Harris Prize, which is awarded to a student who has raised the standard of his or her education by courage and perseverance. Correspondence School teacher Marie O’Leary said that Christopher made a real commitment to his learning and has achieved the goals which were set in his specific education programme. “He engaged in both weekly reading lessons, travelling a considerable distance to reach these and in weekly Skype sessions with his Te Kura learning advisor.”
   Christopher lives with his family at Paturau and has studied by correspondence for seven and a half years.

TDC’s grants and community facilities rate and creative communities subcommittees have approved the following applications for funding:
SPARC Rural Travel Fund: Collingwood Area School, travel between Collingwood and Takaka for four netball teams $1,500. Takaka Amateur Athletics Club, travel to regular local competitions $1,750. Golden Bay Tennis Club taking junior members to Grasshopper and Challenger tennis tournaments in Nelson $800.
Community Development Fund: The Friends of Mangarakau Swamp Inc, to upgrade and improve visitor facilities in the community hall $3,000. The Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society Golden Bay Branch, Labyrinth Rocks Reserve $2,000. Golden Bay Promotion Association Inc, to print a new set of roll-up banners $1,000.
Creative Communities. The White Room, for a workshop towards exhibition $210. Heart Art, towards the community event $1,800. Golden Bay Arts Council, summer programme $350. Takaka Village Market, music and performances $900.

 

Visual arts graduate holds her first exhibition

Ligar Bay artist Suzy Hall, who graduated from the GB Workcentre’s first visual arts course last April, opened an exhibition of her work at Totally Roasted Cafe last Monday afternoon. On show are eight mixed-media works on canvas, most featuring a colonial theme. It will run until the end of January.
