Local elections
As there were five nominations for the four Golden Bay Community Board seats I withdrew my nomination. This withdrawal means a board election is not necessary and results in a saving of $14,400 to the Golden Bay community. This is the sum we are charged by TDC for the “cost of elections” through the iniquitous targeted rate ($4,800pa x 3).
Out of all of the TDC elected representatives, only the Motueka and Golden Bay communities with community boards are “target rated” for the “cost of elections”. We have taken this issue up with TDC without success.
I wish to thank Don Mead and Sheryl Nalder for their nomination and for understanding when I withdrew.
I would also like to thank all of the wonderful people who have contributed to the well-being of our community during the past 15 years, especially board members Carolyn McLellan, who has served 12 years, Leigh Gamby (6) and Karen Brookes (3). Thank you to the Golden Bay Service Centre staff who have been a pleasure to work with.
I wish those elected all the best for the forthcoming term.
Joe Bell
After reading Joe Bell’s letter in last week’s GB Weekly I detected a bit of fear with Paul Sangster standing for council. I am personally backing Paul as I hope others do the same. It would be good to have someone back on council who has a lot of hiss in them; not afraid to stand up for things he believes in; and to represent others on their views. Go Paul and good luck.

Multipurpose recreational and cultural facility
Just a reminder that next Monday, 30 August, there is a public meeting in the Rugby Club rooms at 7pm to discuss the possibility of a multipurpose function centre at the recreation grounds. Anyone interested in having better sports facilities, an indoor pool, large performance venue, meeting rooms, gallery space or anything else is invited to attend. Lloyd Kennedy from TDC, community board members and Bjarne Vandeskog will be in attendance to listen; we would like to hear your views. We would really like to hear from a representative from all interested parties.

Background to the Bible
This year St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will continue its spring series of talks, Background to the Bible, with four talks on The Apostle Paul and the Seven Churches in Revelation. The first of these will be given on Wednesday 1 September in the church at 7.30pm and repeated on Monday 6 at 10am. Topics covered are Paul and his culture, Paul and his journeys, Paul and his strategy, and The Churches of Revelation.
If you are interested it would be helpful if you could ring Bob Reid on 525 9740 in advance so that enough material can be printed. A small donation would be appreciated to help cover expenses.

SPCA Cupcake Day
The Golden Bay SPCA would like to publicly thank all those who have contributed to our appeal for funds toward the development of our shelter facilities so far, in particular our major sponsors, Lee Heller, Steve and Maria Zelko, and Clive Jimenez.
We hope to be able to begin work very soon, and warmly welcome further contributions and pledges toward the provision of a permanent care facility for lost, stray and abandoned animals in the Bay.
The SPCA’s upcoming national fundraising initiative, Cupcake Day, will take place on this Monday, 30 August, and all funds raised in the Bay this year will be dedicated to the shelter. Please look our for our stalls at Fresh Choice, Take Note and Golden Bay Organics, enjoy a cupcake or two and know that you are making a valued contribution to local animal welfare.

Ongoing support for gifted children
Thanks to all families and supporters who attended the recent meeting to explore new social and academic activities and support for the Bay’s gifted and talented children.
A new Explorers-type group will meet monthly for various visits and activities (starting with a puzzle day on September 18, Church of Christ Hall), and other initiatives are under discussion. We welcome offers from people with skills, specialist interests, or interesting properties or professions, who would be happy to share an afternoon or host a visit.
All families or children with gifts and abilities who would like to join in, or who want more information or social contact, please join us. There is no entry test. Ph 525 9851.
