Cory Griffiths (Miss Harcourts) was crowned  Miss Golden Bay show in the Pohara Hall last Saturday night.
Thirteen local men agreed to participate in the competition, each one sponsored by a business.
The contest was a fund-raiser for the cash-strapped Golden Bay High School and organisers were delighted with the results.
“We raised over $7000, which was great,” said Justine Butler, who sold the concept to her colleagues at the high school, the contestants, sponsors and supporters.
“Everyone involved had a very good time. There was a lot of work organising and editing the video section, setting up the light and sound, managing the contestants and sorting out the food and drinks. The judges had a tough job too. The success of the show is down to the people who agreed to help with these and all the other details, as well as the willingness of the fabulous contestants,” said Justine.
Contestants paraded and performed in a talent section, a swimsuit section and a formal-wear section. They were also asked a question to attempt to establish that they had brains as well as beauty.
Miss Golden Bay said that the contestants had had a “great time backstage”.
“It was awesome to see everyone have a good time and it was good fun exploring my feminine side. After so many guys see how much fun we were all having, I’m sure there will be no shortage of new contestants if the contest runs again next year. I’ll be happy to go along and hand on my crown to a new Miss Golden Bay.”
