It’s Golden Bay in a microcosm.
The Price of Milk, now an established annual event, is a little bit of everything we are, live on stage. It’s modern, classical, alternative, inventive, musical, physical, visual and fun. Facing the audience, some cosied up in the front row on the Village Theatre sofas, is not unlike performing in a large living room for all your family and friends.
There’s fleet-fingered students on guitar, a jeweller-come-composer, the bank teller-come sultry lounge singer. There’s a bunch of friends giving a juicy, wiggly Zumba introduction, an eloquent poet using the movie screen to bring extra effect to her words, and a short film covering all the best of what Golden Bay is: the landscape, the people, grinning children, inquisitive animals, misty mornings, sparkling beaches.
Few are professional performers, but there’s no shortage of talent, commitment and the heartfelt joy of performance. On the eve of Father’s Day, Nick Feint’s song about fatherhood hits all the right buttons. There’s excitement in Josh van der Waay’s dexterous rock rendition of Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major: stars are built on stages such as this.

For years now this variety show has played to full audiences always keen to enjoy and support a bit of home-grown entertainment and a genuine community night out.
