Six Takaka athletes travelled to the recent South Island Colgate Games in Dunedin. There was a high standard of competitors, but the Takaka athletes were strong and came home with two medals. Many record performances and personal bests were achieved in the chilly, windy and sometimes rainy conditions.
Rosie Taylor-Richmond had an outstanding performance and won gold in the 12-year-old girl’s long jump (4.55m), 4th in the 200 metre sprint (29.3s), 5th in the 100-metre sprint (13.9s) and 6th in high jump with a new club record of 1.35m.
The accident rate was high with the hurdles, with two broken arms and many torn muscles amongst the athletes but it didn’t put Lauren Gardiner off who won bronze in the 12-year-old girls’ hurdles (14.44s), 4th in the 400-metre run (1.06.99mins) and 7th in the 800-metre run (2.42.09mins).
Danyon Fleming was 5th in the 1500-metre run with a new club record of 4.47.17mins, and 6th in the 800-metre run (2.18.40mins). Ryley Fleming gained personal bests with each event.
In the under-ten age groups, participation is encouraged. Pendants are awarded for wins in divisions of events. Kyle Gardiner won bronze in the 9-year-old boys’ discus, and a personal best in the long jump. Mikaela Gardiner gained the club record for 8-year-old girls’ shot put with a throw of 4.36m and personal bests in her other events.
The next Colgate games were scheduled for Nelson, however due to Saxton field not being completed, they will now be in Christchurch.
