The invitation by the White Room galleristas to come along and make a winged creature for Flutterby Butterfly has been taken up enthusiastically by creative minds.
“It really took us by surprise,” said Kas Muller, standing in the small gallery room surrounded by paper butterflies. “It has been so popular, not only with the kids but with everybody across all ages, and it looks fantastic.”
Toy Murchie and Kas organised funding from Creative Communities to purchase paper and paint, but have now run out of materials and space to accommodate the fluttering creations.
“We had a big table out here and it was chaos sometimes with people queuing up,” said Kas. “Every year we run something interactive for the community. We didn’t have mainly kids in here doing a quick blob-blob on the paper, but also a lot of adults, who are more meticulous and spent more time on their butterflies. It’s gorgeous—it looks colourful and happy.” The butterflies also bear different facial expressions.
The purpose of the interactive exhibitions was to get people doing something creative, and it was a “great way to start the new year” Toy said. “We had locals and people from outside the Bay and international visitors in the gallery. It is really nice for people to be part of something in which people from all over the world have taken part in.”
Toy and Kas have lost count, but estimated more than 600 butterflies floated airily through the White Room. As the exhibition is on its last day, the butterflies will have to find a new home.
“We will do something with them, and if someone wants lots of butterflies we are open for suggestions. We will definitely keep them,” said Toy.
The White Room is open during normal business hours. The Flutterby Butterfly exhibition finishes today, Friday 28 January.
