Lineup confirmed for a whopping Golden Bay A&P Show 2011: a rural community shows off its best

A stellar programme of events and activities at this year’s A&P Show, to be held at Takaka Recreation Park, Saturday 15 January.
Show committee secretary Jean Wedderburn said that outstanding events this year promised to be the beef cattle display, the large numbers of poultry entries, the new synchronised lawnmowing competition (entries being taken now at Golden Bay Mechanical), the Harcourts Charity auction, which has moved from the Village Green to the showgrounds, and several new trade stands and business displays, from children’s clothing to willow basket coffins.
Other displays will include quilting, in the Keith Page Hall; Lester Rowntree’s team of bullocks; a scything display by Ross Doyle; a collection of vintage machinery with a newly restored steam engine; Diddly Squat, the most placid Jersey cow for patting and hand-milking; and a sow with her cute piglets.
For the public’s entertainment or participation there will also be wood-chopping competitions, sheep-shearing and wool-handling competitions, a blade shearing demonstration by Ross Doyle, Sturgeon’s fairground entertainments, fun bikes, balloons, face painting, juggling and magical magic with Adam Allsorts, and the Takaka Citizens and Motueka Highland Pipe Bands.
The organisers are asking people not to bring their dogs, as the Takaka Recreation Park is a Tasman District Council “No Dog”  area.
The gates open at 8am. Tickets are available now at $6 from Lindsays Clothing and Sport, or for $8 at the gate on Show Day. Catalogues are available from Lindsays Clothing and Sport and PGG Wrightson.
