Rain early this week was greeted with enthusiasm by the organisers of the Top of the South motocross championships.
“It’s perfect for preparing the track, normally we’d be out with the hoses early in the week. The track should be primo by the weekend,” said Shane Harwood, one of the organisers.
The big meeting, to be held at the Motupipi track, draws riders from all over the South Island as well as the best motocross exponents in our region.
Australian and New Zealand junior champion, Hamish Harwood will be once more be looking to achieve good results in the Top of the South event, but in the senior grade this time.
“I’m nearly eligible to riding in the senior grade anyway. At this stage of my career it’s better for me to be riding against the seniors.”
Hamish has recently returned from the Australian junior championships and it’s likely he had excess baggage worries because of the two huge trophies he had with him.
Hamish says there is a particular motivation for him to do well on his home track. The Motupipi track is sited on his grandparents’ farm and it is where he does a lot of his training.
He also says that he realises that his recent success nationally and internationally means there are high expectations around his performance - from others and from himself.
