High school pool

Thanks to Stuart Machin and his team at GBHS, a TDC grant and  the contractors, it looks like the GBHS pool will likely be open and heated by the time you read this.
The community benefits greatly from after-school access to this facility with: the Golden Bay Swimming club enrolling nearly 100 swimmers; many adults enjoying access via the keyholder system; public supervised swimming in the summer; Georgie’s popular aquarobics classes; and now hopefully a resurrected masters swimming group. What a wonderful asset this pool is for Golden Bay.
Again the more community use and support there is, the more likely this facility will remain viable with heating and maintenance costs covered. Those of you interested in the new Masters group please meet poolside Thursday 10 November (see ad in sports section). Let’s all look forward to a summer of swimming.

Golden Bay Tap Dance Group

Congratulations and thanks to Anita and all the children and young adults for the wonderful Tap Dance Concert last weekend. It was great to see so many young folk succeeding on stage; so full credit for the hours of tap dance practices.
As a parent I witnessed first-hand how much effort a few key people put into making a concert happen, including the hours spent making costumes and props. So well done Anita for juggling family life, a business and organising a tap concert!

Swimming pool at the Multipurpose Facility

Thank you to the many people who have contacted us in support of a year-round covered pool in Golden Bay. Your comments and requests have been truly inspiring in their passion and diversity of water-based interests. There are still many of you out there whom we have not heard from yet based on comments in many emails and texts referring to “a number of their friends and families who would also use the pool”. We need you to contact us now before it’s too late. It’s really important that we have numbers to show that the pool will be well attended and able to offer the programs the community is asking for. Contact Marguerite Dooley at 525 6112, 027 388 2279 or msdooley@clear.net.nz. Include your name, contact details, pool usage and frequency. The most common statement throughout the responses received is; “the only thing Golden Bay is missing is a year-round pool”.

Go Goldywood!

Congratulations and thanks to Paddy Brennan, John Salmon and Sarah Kay for their hard work in organising yet another Allshorts Film Festival which enthralled a full house and made me emerge from the theatre afterward feeling that mixture of pleasure, satisfaction, slight disgust and over-indulgence one would after consuming a whole packet of Licorice Allsorts!
What a feast of quality amateur film, cleverly selected for a range of genre, age, talent, and mood. The significant  local content, (six out of 17 films), on the whole enthralled me more than most of the other contributions from around the country and must surely put Golden Bay on the map as a successful breeding ground  for talented budding film makers. Paddy’s enthusiasm and welcome to film makers and audience from Golden Bay and around the country, the red carpet, glass of bubbly and nibbles all contributed to an excellent local arts event which I am sure will continue to grow and provide an important opportunity for student film makers to display their work and get some public recognition and feedback.

Golden Bay Boys and Girls A and P show

A big thanks to the organisers and all the volunteer judges and stewards for giving up their time to make the show a success.  It was great to see so many children so proud of their animals and crafts. Hopefully the stalls made a few bob for their chosen school/group too. Special thanks to the rabbit judge who gave my little girl a green ribbon for her rabbit. It’s not always about winning, (which is a red ribbon), especially when green is her favourite colour!
