On Wednesday 28 December Collingwood will be busy with a market and a raft race.
The Art and Craft Market will run from 9am-1pm in the Collingwood Memorial Hall. Stalls will be varied, with crafts, arts, cards, soaps, clothes and carbooters. Kathy Reilly will exhibit her new series of teacup etchings, Reg Turner will be show his oil paintings and Go Willow! will be exhibiting their new memorial urns and animal burial baskets. Stall enquiries should be made to Sally Trotter on 524 8755.
This year any funds raised will go to the Collingwood Playcentre which needs to raise $11,000 to cover running costs and new equipment. The Playcentre will run a cake stall, a baby clothing stall and a sausage sizzle.
The day also marks the terrible flooding that took place along the Aorere on the same date last year, which caused everything to be cancelled – but this year it will be held rain or shine! Photos of the flood will be on display at the Aorere Centre on Tasman Street, Collingwood.
The much loved Collingwood Raft Race is planned to start at 1pm down the Aorere River from Beardmore’s Beach.  Organisers encourage rafters to assemble at 12 midday. All participants must wear life jackets and rafts must have a 5-metre tow rope, just in case a rescue is needed. There will be the Senior Race for the Bright Cup, a Junior Race, and various competitions for the Most Outlandish Raft and others. Collingwood Raft Race enquiries should go to Brian Gilbert (aka The Sherriff) on 524 8731.
