Recipes for food and fun in fundraiser cookbook
Big funding cuts by the Ministry of Education have prompted Takaka Playcentre to launch a new cookbook, which they hope will help cover increased operating costs and buy new equipment.
Six months in the making, the 115-page, spiral-bound production features 93 recipes as well as the pen-and-ink illustrations of Hesta Macready.
Fundraising committee co-producer Uta Gay says the book has been compiled with families in mind.
“We hope its pages will all get covered in lots of smudges due to frequent use. A large section called ‘Fun Stuff for Kids’ includes instructions for making playdough, salt dough, slime, bubble mixture, bird pudding, ginger beer, easy ice cream, bath bombs and more – all stuff to keep kids busy and have some real fun with.”
Playcentre parents freely provided their favourite recipes for the book (these appear anonymously), but another section features recipes donated by local restaurants and cafés. Local foodwriter/chef Fiona Feasey provided three, while the Mussel Inn has given up the secrets of its seafood chowder and carrot cake. Recipes by Sans Souci, Takaka Infusion, Dangerous Kitchen, Feel Good Food, The Brigand and Wild Health Foods from Nelson also feature.
The big Baking section has cake, biscuit and bread recipes, while the Main Meal section features chicken, meat and fish dishes. The Light Meals, Soups and Salad section lists, amongst others, pumpkin soup, devilled paua and raw marinated fish, while the Chutneys, Sauces and Extras section tells you how to make homemade tomato sauce, pesto, aioli, chutneys and salad dressings.
Both Hesta and Uta are keen to distinguish this publication from the GBHS cookbook that was launched last month.
“This one is quite different,” explains Uta. “It’s a book that is very readable with children. They can actually find the page with the bubble mixture or the gingerbread man recipe because the pictures match. Hesta’s hand illustrations really set this book apart. The pages have individually drawn titles, borders, and beautiful, simple and very appealing images, which support the recipes. It’s the perfect cookbook for families with small children or grandparents.”
Takaka Playcentre will be launching their Takaka Playcentre Cookbook on Saturday 10 December at the Village Market in front of the library. It costs $25, but Playcentre parents can expect a discount when buying several copies. It will be available afterwards from Playcentre, GB Organics, Fresh Choice and Artisans.

Tharchin to teach here
Lharampa Geshe Jampa Tharchin was born on a farm in Tibet in 1969. His family was very poor and he often did not have enough to eat but says he was very happy during his younger years. At the age of 19 Geshe trekked through the high Himalayan mountains to Nepal, then made his way to India where he met His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Following the advice of the Dalai Lama, Geshe entered Sera Je Monastic university where he studied for 23 years, gaining the Lharampa Geshe Degree, a PhD in Buddhist philosophy. He then went on to study at Gyume Tantric College, gaining a further degree. Geshe Tharchin thus holds the highest philosophical qualification possible.
Geshe taught in Nepal before coming to New Zealand and he is now the resident teacher at the Chandrakirti Meditation Centre in Upper Moutere. This is his first visit to a western country and everything is new to him; he is having to learn all our habits and customs and the way we think.
Geshe is really looking forward to meeting Golden Bay people when he is teaching at Shambala Retreat Centre in Onekaka on Friday 16 December (evening) and Saturday 17 December (morning). Geshe Tharchin enjoys sharing what he has learned and enjoys hearing people’s stories and answering their questions. Display ad on page 19 or phone John on 525 8463.

“The day was a huge success. A huge number of students participated. Many new records were set as well.”
