Patons Rock builder Wayne Rothwell has won the supreme award in the $250,000 to $500,000 renovation category in the national finals of the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.
The renovation job was on the home of Dr Angela Pack at Patons Rock. Wayne was one of two national finalists in his section, having made it there on the basis of his very high scores in the regional competition.
“I’m thrilled for Wayne,’ said Angela. “Whether he had got the recognition in the awards or not, he was already a winner for me. He was so fastidious and accurate.”
The house, once owned by the Page family, was where Angela and her late husband spent their honeymoon in 1978. They kept visiting other parts of Patons Rock for holidays when they lived and worked in Dunedin, and in 1995 noticed that the cottage was for sale and bought it. Angela retired in 2001 and, after the death of her husband, made Patons Rock her home.
“I was originally going to pull the old cottage down and replace it, but a builder friend persuaded me to do up what I had. The roofline is very distinctive and worth preserving. The renovations have given me a state-of-the-art kitchen, a lovely new main bathroom and ensuite, a bigger bedroom and a study/library. I’m very happy.”
Wayne, who originally came to the Bay from Fox Glacier, said that the renovation posed different challenges from new building work, and that he was pleased with the way the job had turned out. The team of expert judges clearly agreed.
