The Family Fun Ride, part of Bike Wise month, turned out to be popular last Sunday. Over 120 cyclists participated, despite the hot weather and the other events on offer last weekend.
Not only did the ride attract many families with small and larger children, but people of all ages and abilities came to ride their bikes from Central to East Takaka, many having cycled from further afield.
Lots of keen volunteers, TDC and Way 2 Go staff were involved on the day and council’s road safety co-ordinator Krista Hobday was pleased with the overall participation.
“I am very happy with the turnout, and it is great to see so many families supporting the bike ride and everybody seems to be having a good time,” said Krista. “We are trying a different route this year to get people off the main highway, and it worked out well. Escape Adventures brought their big bike trailer and offered to take people and their bikes back up the hill to Central Takaka School for those who didn’t want to bike back.”
To keep the crowd amused, Way to Go volunteers brought special biking equipment for activities that challenged cyclists’ agility and bravado, while other bikers took a rest in the shade.
East Takaka resident Nancy Ward handed every participant a number as they passed the finish line as entry in the prize draw for spot prizes and the main prize, a brand new Avanti bike donated by Escape Adventures and Avanti.
Nancy, who volunteered for the event to represent East Takaka, knew most of the participants from her work at the library, and enjoyed greeting all the children personally by name.
