Colin Wilson has started a brand new light-engineering business on the main road into Takaka.
Called White Rock Engineering, the business will build and repair anything in steel.
“I’m a mechanic by trade but I’ve been doing maintenance engineering for so long it’s like second nature,” says Colin. “I’m only limited by the size of my workshop, really. Basically if you want something built or repaired and it can be done in steel, I’ll have a go. I’ve got MIG and arc welders, a press with a 30-tonne push and two lathes.”
Colin is about to start his first major job. “I quoted for a 3.6m trailer to carry 13 mountain bikes. It’s a big single-axle thing: long, but not all that heavy.”
While Colin’s new workshop was being built he kept himself busy creating tin artworks, and now they have become a sideline to White Rock’s business.
“I made a couple for myself but other people liked them and commented on them. Now I’ve branched out, from butterflies to turtles, marlin and lizards. They’re something new—an experiment that worked. I’ve got my sign out on the road and people are welcome to come and have a look.”
White Rock Engineering is at 40 Main Road Takaka.
