Crown Minerals should grant Greywolf Goldmining NL the prospecting, drilling and mining permits it is seeking.

  1. John Pemberton says "Tasman Bay is a fragile environment where an oil spill would be devastating. Trucking large quantities of coal from North of Collingwood to Tarakohe? No thanks! Members of this government have shown themselves willing to set aside "off limits" nature of National Parks. Other special areas (e.g. Whanganui Inlet) are even more at risk. GB is an environmental treasure and should not be put in jeopardy for the sake of what I believe will be limited returns from oil, gas, coal and minerals."

  2. Bay Watcher says "Its quite simple if their are valuable deposits of coal oil and minerals leave them locked up for as long as you can it is better than Money in the Bank. 1 they will increase in value. 2 their will be advances in the technology and the improved safe ways to extractery . 3 as time goes on we will come to the realisation that selling rights to overseas mining companies is a hugh mistake and to maximise control and return it must be done by New Zealand companies. "

  3. Tania says "Yet again an overseas company wants to rape our resources. Sadly we can not expect any support for our opposition from our local MP Chris Auchinvole. We do not need to look to far back to see what can happen when oil and mining operations go wrong. Lets not make the same mistakes again."

  4. Jonny Hanlon says "Firstly, I wonder why so many people who contribute to these forums are afraid to use their real name? I can see why anonymity can be useful, but come on everyone, take some ownership of your opinion! I'd hate to see large scale oil, gas and coal extraction in Golden Bay. I'd hate to see it in anyone else's bay, hillside, plain, field or city. Sure, I'm a hypocrite, using oil to drive my car. However I don't support the development and expansion of the fossil fuel industry. "If we're not outraged, then we're not paying attention!""

  5. Rodd says "Please people... At this stage they are looking at hwat is there and quantity of product... They are not digging! Let them see, at least then we all know what is there and are wiser for this at their cost. Excavation comes later and is a different kettle of fish!"

  6. Ray Parkes says "Commerce and industry do not solve problems they create them. They are both based on service to self which totally ignores the greater good of all. Our planet is dieing because of it. There was very little polution before industrialisation. The majority of that polution comes from the production of energy. This is paticularly stupid when you become aware that viable alternatives have been availble for a very long time. I am not talking about the so called alternative energy of solar or wind power which is rather crude, inefficient and expensive at best. Even a cursory study of Telsar (the inventor of alternating current) is enough to make you realise that he had far more to offer. I am not advocating a return to pre industrialisation far from it, I want to move beyond it. If it no longer serves let's get rid of it. Energy devices based on zero point technology and the transmission of energy without wires has been calously squashed by the very industries that claim to be helping us. We need to ask them why and demand what has been held back from us, not let them destroy the very fabric of the planet that sustains us for the sake of a few mucky jobs."

  7. Gordon Mather says "The proposal to explore for oil in coastal GB and coal in the Pupopnga and Collingwood areas is a backwards view in an age when several other alternative energy sources are available and economically viable, at lower environmental cost and risk. As should be the case for all such decisions, the balance of realistically achievable benefits needs to be weighed alongside the real risks and potential for long term negative impacts on the local environment. We have moved beyond the age of coal as a primary energy source, and although still heavily dependent on oil, should not be so desperate as to get it from environmentally sensitive areas, where the risk to biota and the local communities that owe their economic well-being to recognised intrinsic environmental values of outstanding merit are great. Golden Bay is increasingly valued for the inherent beauty of its landscapes and seascapes, not just nationally but internationally. These features are fragile and easily destroyed. When are added to this the outstanding biotic values of the region, being home to a distinctive and special assemblage of plant and animals that is now recognised internationally as of global significance, we surely have a duty to safeguard and protect this resource for all. Notwithstanding the rich history of mining and other extractive industries that enliven the history of the Bay, we now live in times when a greater understanding of the importance of these biological values has been gained. The balance has swung firmly in favour of the much greater, longterm benefits that conserving these natural resources confer not just to the local community and economy, but to a much wider human good. Recent history has shown that all too often, the promised benefits to the local community of extractive industries financed by overseas capital have been illusory. In too many cases, the impact has been disastrous and has wrecked the lives of local folk, while any economic gains have disappeared offshore. Residents of the region have a duty and a right to protect this resource, not simply out of self interest for their own home, but as guardians of a resource that has much wider importance. Let us take up this challenge with knowledge and conviction that sadly any environmental mistake is likely to be irreversible. The stakes are high and the urgency great. "

  8. graham robertson says "Here we go again the hypocrites who use petrol based products every day wanting to shut down everything that resembles any form of industry or exploration for the bay...they say eco tourism will be the savour for the bay....they bring out the old bogey of it will ruin the bay...I say how do you think the bays tourists got there in the first place... horse and cart/bike i dont think so but i am pretty sure it involved oil. There are natural oil seeps all over the country...its actually a natural product. I find it amazing that all these people will jump in their petroleum based transport, wearing petroleum based products and jump up and down saying not in my back yard but someone else s ...Golden bay is being suffocated by people who move there and do not want anything to happen and everything to stay the same...they even forget their very presence is in fact altering the enviroment they want to save. You do not have to wreck an area to use its resources....its actually called preventable planning and happens successfully all over the world except takaka. The best thing for Golden Bay would be for a tunnel under the Takaka hill for all these oxygen thieves to leave on foot(dont use a bike because it has oil based products in its construction). More damage has been done to the bays ecology by our previous generations than will ever be done by modern companies subject to stringent rules Give the younger generation a reason to stay in the bay instead of making it an exclusive and expensive gods waiting room for the elite to retire in. PS I AM A THINKING MANS GREENIE AT HEART BUT BELIEVE TECHNOLOGY AND MODERN WORK PRACTICES CAN OVERCOME THE VERY PROBLEMS THAT ARE RAISED....THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN NZ IS THAT THE SQUEAKY WHEELS OF SOCIETY GET THE PUBLICITY AND THE SILENT MAJORITY GET TRODDEN ON AND NZ AS A RESULT IS SUFFERING "

  9. Victoria Davis says "The fact is, unlike the previous writer claims, "modern companies are subject to stringent rules"..... there are no comprehensive protections in place for people's lives {remember Pike River] or for the environment. The winners are the very rich, known environmental devastators that are overseas oil companies. "

  10. Carol Cavanaugh says "Good article and discussion. But I just want to add that much of the reason asbestos became such a health crisis is that so many companies failed to properly inform and protect their own employees. This is common decency and common sense if you have a business. Surely, everyone here is aware of what happened in Libby, Montana? If you aren’t, then please read the following: http://www.weitzlux.com/asbestos/libby-montana_1090353.html www.weitzlux.com/Johns-Manville-asbestos_1962683.html "

  11. John says "I am completely opposed to Mining or oil drilling in the Golden Bay area, Graham says that modern work practises can overcome all the concerns raised, but my 30 years of experience living in various Industrial towns has shown me different, they attract many people that will not be aligned to the natural & wholesome principles that are a major presence there. Also more cars, more traffic, more fast food outlets, etc. Why can we not have a Bay that does not follow the senseless path of environmental degradation & blind consumerism on show everywhere? Once developed it's gone forever & the impetus for further development will be sustained by more people with lifestyles to support. Please leave the Bay alone! "

  12. Concerned says "We would like to recommend that, before any consideration be given to this venture, both the company, Greywolf Mining NL (also known as Greywolf Resources NL), and, in particular, the CEO of the company, firstly be investigated to establish their background and integrity. All that glitters is not gold…….. In this case, what may seem viable on the surface will, in practice, prove to be otherwise. Although the possibility of a single royalty payment to the Golden Bay community may seem attractive, this will prove to be a mere pittance compared to the huge profits which will be made by the joint Chinese-Australian consortium. Neither is there any guarantee that the royalty payment will actually be received, nor the ravaged land restored to its former condition. Rather, the cost of restoring the Bay to its original beauty and character is likely to cost far in excess of any royalties received. With regard to the possibility of jobs perhaps being made available to local residents, experience shows that foreign companies tend to employ their own workers and advisers, specially brought into the country, as evidenced by similar mining operations in Africa. Please do not place the tranquility and beauty of the Golden Bay area of New Zealand in jeopardy. Before making any irrevocable decision, the whole proposal needs to be thoroughly and extensively researched. "

  13. hika rountree says "Rodd & Graham both raise good points. There seems to be much criticism and negative emotion when ever big business or industry and GB appear in the same sentence. Whilst personally I would not like to see the coal venture gain any traction it would seem negligent of our community to not at least let big business undertake prospecting in our waters. Whilst not advocating drilling or mining it would seem letting big business study and investigate our resources. with GB having the writes to the findings. it could be beneficial to the bay?We should firstly find out if commercial quantizes of oil or gas are present and there location before we get to emotive. jonny hanlon talks of hypocrites? they are far to influential in our community. We need to see more facts and surveys, find out were these deposits lie and in what volumes and what it would take to harvest them safely and sustainable y. There has been Rigs off the West coast of the North Iland for many years that have proved that Industry can provide plenty to NZ. we all rely on oil somehow."

  14. Tommo says "I strongly recommend that the credentials of a one Edward Lancaster, the head of Greywolf, be checked out. I had dealings with a Ted Lancaster while i lived in Sydney where he was associated with a cash back scheme and another company called Blue Sky investments. We rented our house to him and his family who in the course of a year refused to pay any rent - we being one of many other victims. Edward and his family never had any intention of paying the $45000 owing in rent despite tribunal rulings. He was a devious and cunning person who has a long history of bankruptcy and dodgy dealings. I would suggest that Crown minerals check his background before proceeding any further. Looking at the picture on the Greywolf site it would appear to be the same Ted Lancaster. Cheers Tommo"

  15. Copie says "I am amazed at the hypocritcal greenies who put fuel in their car so as to travel to a protest rally. New Zealand should be developing its resources just like they do in wealthy Australia."

  16. tommo says "I can now confirm that the Ted Lancaster i referred to in my earlier email is the one who ripped us off in Sydney - Greywolf is a scam and nothing more. I dont think any application for mining will go beyond the perusal stage!"

  17. 3 News says "Hi Tommo, Could you please contact me cshipman@mediaworks.co.nz Thanks, Charlotte Shipman 3news"

  18. Concerned says "Tommo needs to be taken seriously. Every word he has said has been experienced by many other unsuspecting people for many years. He is also correct about the bankruptcy and what he calls 'dodgy' dealings, otherwise known as scams and fraud. The many court cases can attest to that."

  19. John Cowburn says "Heads up Golden Bay!!! From media reports today it would seem that Greywolf have pulled out ..... according to their (new) NZ Chief Executive John Rutherford .... he's a Christchurch Lawyer with an interesting past. Just Google "John Rutherford" Christchurch Lawyer and have a look. I worked in the oil industry for 18 years in the UK and Maggie Thatcher, at that time, gained all the 'Royalties' from North Sea oil for the UK - which is now broke!! Enough said. Oil exploration needs specialised personnel and so do oil rigs - they would come from abroad as, with only one oil refinery in NZ at Whangerei, we're not exactly flush with experience - plus we would need a deep-water port and Tarakohe Harbour doesn't exactly ring any bells in that department... none of the information and statements I have read so far actually stack up... if I was a betting man I'd say that something is not right and you need to be on your guard. One day, once we sell up on the east coast of NZ, we will be moving to GB. Good Luck!!!"

  20. daniel says "do you want to hold your country back in the dark ages ,it is pretty clear that 99 percent of all written above is from people that DONT see past their own nose, things change, times change, goverments change, laws change, minning has changed in a way that has to comply with goverment standards that protect land, sea beaches, etc, etc it is pretty clear that a lot of intrest is in nz at this time ,be fair in your comments and mind, think beyond.I personaly would rather try to beal with an australian company than one from elsewhere"

  21. Rosie Callaghan says "I just can't see the risk being worth it. Full stop."

  22. leonie Johnsen says "having listened to the lecture by the scientist James Hansen recently I don't know why you are even asking this question. its not about the risk of spills, or the economy, its much simpler than that. its our future existence on the planet. With atmospheric CO2 soaring above safe levels we are rapidly approaching a point where we wont be able to reverse climate change. His message was very simple. Keep the remaining coal/fossil fuels in the ground, we must develop a clean energy future if we wish to be here at all."

  23. cookingnoob says "Hello, I have a problem. My friends like american food and I told them that I can cook them for them but unfortenately I can't. 24. former golden bayer says "dearest vicky i think you should be careful when talking about pikes mine,,i believe this was a series of events that sadly cause a major workplace accident..forgive if im wrong but i take it you have never worked in a underground mine, well take it from me i have,i went to school with one of those boys,,and i know you see the wide range of dangers every day.so you do not know everything, you arent gods gift of everything and i just wish you would keep your just great ideas to yourself, you seem to dislike it when other people are having what they think is fun.you came here on your own will to are town were we were brought up to ride bikes,to drive in paddocks,to work hard,to make do with what we have, and then when there is a gap a small gap to get a head in life by a mining company with some of the biggest investors in china and japan to try and take a fuel that could maybe lower your price of fuel and create jobs in golden bay for the younger people,do you know how strict and hawk eye watched oil companies are.i highly dout it.this greywolf company is a well set up well organised mining exploration outfit that have some of the most sort after tenders in western australia.do yo really think they would pick on a small town like takaka if they werent going to give something back,no the are legaly binded to give a percentage back to the community.i heard americian airways are still doing one ways?"

  25. FAFA says " EDWARD LANCASTER/TED LANCASTER IS A SERIAL CON-ARTIST. Thanks Tommo (your comment May 22nd 2011 about Ted Lancaster, Ceo of Grey Wolf) In New Zealand, about 29 years ago, my friends mother(who was an international concert pianist)sadly died, and he inherited about $650,000.00 and a big house in England. TED LANCASTER was a real estate salesman in Auckland, my friend a photographer, told him about the inheritance. Ted said he had companies to invest in, then took him to Ted's lawyers in a very large affluent suite in Queen Street to see bogus accounting books claiming fantastic success of the English and New Zealand companies that Ted apparently had shares in.Convinced, my friend invested all, to discover immediately that the companies were a sham. Following this,Ted would not return calls.Friend went to Ted's substantially rich house (surrounded by high security gates), dogs, cars, boats etc..Ted's wife laughed at my friend and said "I don't care, we live the high life, have money for travel overseas etc, thanks to stupid people like you.We never get caught because we are so intelligent." My friend went to police, referred onto the Serious Fraud Squad who knew Ted Lancaster Con man well, interpol watching closely. Apparently Ted ripped so many off in England, he got too well known, went to Australia and continued there, and now is in New Zealand ( my friend saw him in Auckland a few weeks ago from across the street). The police could not prosecute Ted or get my friends money back. The lawyer firm that was paid by Ted to show false financial documents for bogus or non-existent investment companies Teds victims was prosecuted and the company dissolved. My friend lost his mother early in life. Ted took his fortune. White collar crime devastates peoples lives.Ted should be locked up for good. "
