Second Breakfast Book Quiz
The entrants in the competition. Right: The Collingwood team members who had to leave early due to a flood warning.
Golden Bay’s keenest and most retentive young readers took part in the second annual Breakfast Book Quiz at the Takaka Memorial Library last week.
The quiz attracted teams from Collingwood Area School, Central Takaka School, Motupipi School and Takaka Primary School.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast put on by the team at the library, the quiz teams settled down to work. Last year’s winning school, Central Takaka School retained the prestigious Breakfast Book Quiz Cup but all the participants showed impressive knowledge of some selected books and writing for young people generally.
Takaka Memorial Library’s children and youth library assistant Doris Symmons selected three titles from the recent NZ Post Book Awards and posed some very searching questions about them. This year there was also a round of questions that the teams could not prepare for. It required knowledge of a range of books popular with young readers and it was obvious that there are some very well-read young people in the Bay’s schools.
“There is always lots of recognition for people who are good at sport,” said Doris. “I wanted to provide a way for our best readers to be recognised and rewarded too. All the teams did really well. ”
