It’s an expensive business representing your country.
Reece Potter is off to the world mountain bike championships in Champery, Switzerland in late August and the trip is likely to cost him at least $7000. Reece will ride the under-19 men’s individual downhill event.
Members of the Golden Bay Mountain Bike Club organised Reece’s Winter Warmer last weekend to help the Takaka student with his expenses. The event involved teams of riders doing laps of a Rameka course for six hours and seeking sponsorship to help. Reece rode the course for the entire six hours, regularly clocking up laps that were quick enough to make the leader-board.
Club supporters also equipped and ran a refreshments station at the event with water, soup, cake and barbecued sausages for sale. Including the raffled trailer-load of wood, split and stacked by Reece himself, nearly $5000 was raised on the day.
“It’s amazing how generous people have been,” said Reece. “So many people have been so supportive. I just want to thank them.”
