“I promote the whole business of having a really good time,” says Golden Bay’s community recreation co-ordinator.
Just at the moment Dave Myall is putting the finishing touches to the Boredom Busters programme for the next school holidays. With his boundless enthusiasm and his knack of knowing what kids like, Dave has assembled a programme that is sure to attract plenty of enrolments.
“There is a cost involved, but compared to straight-out babysitting it’s very reasonable. On top of that the kids get to experience so much more and they get to bring things home. And we’re way cheaper than the holiday activities over the Hill. Not everyone realises that there is a subsidy available. through WINZ and that means parents can get on with their jobs or their study knowing that their kids are having one heck of a good time.”
Dave aims for variety in his Boredom Buster activities while keeping an eye on cost and utilising the multitude of skills on offer from his team of tutors. He says he is particularly pleased with the upcoming programme.
“We’re doing a mystery bus trip in the Bay – but here’s a hint – if there’s snow on the Hill we’re going to check it out. As well as that there’s a movie day about robots and we’ll be making robot costumes before we walk down Commercial Street to the cinema. There’s a hut and garden day and of course we’ll have ‘hut dogs’ for lunch that day. On top of that there’s a very exciting activity involving a couple of hours at the aerodrome. We’ll make some cardboard planes and find out about navigation and how planes work and then we’ll have a 10-minute flight.”
Dave says that some of the perennially popular Boredom Buster activities will once again feature in the programme. That means fans of the motorbike activity, stone-carving, super chef pizza day and rifle shooting will not be disappointed. He says he is really looking forward to the games day challenge, involving skills like golf putting and archery.
“Two others that the crafty kids are sure to like are the fabric painting day and the crazy creatures day. The kids can bring along a t-shirt or a pillow case and we’ll do some fabric painting. We’ll make some flags as well that day. The crazy creatures will be made out of all the assembled art materials. It should be great fun. Boredom Busters is a great thing for kids to do with their current mates. It’s a great way to meet some new ones too.”
