Participants and organisers expressed great satisfaction with a motorcycle skills course organised in Takaka recently.
Four motorcyclists braved the foul weather two weekends ago to learn about safe riding practices and simple strategies for increasing their enjoyment and safety.
“The Top of the South is a great place for motorcycling,” said Roadsafe Motorcylce Techniques instructor Jen Trow. “We’ve got excellent roads for riding here – like the Takaka Hill. It’s seen as a motorcycling destination. Unfortunately that means we’re over-represented in crash statistics. That’s why ACC and the local councils organise and sponsor these courses. In just a few hours riders can learn practical things that make riding safer.”
“The course was excellent,”said one participant. “Really practical and useful. It will change the way I ride. Everyone who rides a motorbike should do one.”
Krista Hobday TDC road safety co-ordinator said, “I think the Roadsafe courses are fantastic. The normal charge for their one-day course is over $200 so the $20 we charge is really good value. We don’t get to everyone we’d like to, but if we can save one life or even prevent one crash we’re doing something very worthwhile. Some riders will think they already know it all but if we get to a group and start spreading the word, people may realise that there’s always more to learn. The courses have been going for a number of years now and we have quite a few people who come back each time because they say they learn something new and useful.
We’ve had everyone from very young scooter riders to older people who have been bikers for 50 or 60 years. Everyone gets something out of them.”
Krista said that further course would be held in Golden Bay if enough motorcyclists showed interest. She can be contacted on 0800 589 689.
