The annual contest, hosted by the Telegraph Hotel, saw 13 pigs captured as well as plenty of hares and possums in the children’s hunt. The traditional auction raised $300 for St John.
A highlight of the associated chopping events was the presence of Adam Lowe from Karamea, a world-record holder in the standing chop and current West Coast Sportsman of the Year. Adam had a go at the New Zealand record for the standing block but just missed out, mostly because the wood was not ideal. Lex Taylor from the Telegraph said that Adam was keen to appear at the Telegraph event again because it was there that he first chopped competitively in public many years ago.
