New hoist for GB Hospital

Golden Bay Lions has presented the community hospital with a high-tech hoist.
The community nurses will be the principal users of the new equipment. It will enable patients to be easily lifted and moved from one place to another – say from their bed to a wheelchair, for example. It will make toileting and showering much easier for people who have lost their independent mobility.
The fact that the community nurses have access to the new hoist will give some patients the option to remain at home for longer, rather than having to go to hospital.
Golden Bay Lions president Brian Devonshire said that local fundraising efforts like the Lions’ popular pickled onions (which sold out) and the weekly firewood raffle helped the club to support community projects like the hoist.

The Price of Milk

You hear a lot about the talent that abounds in our community. A great array of that talent will be on show in the ninth annual Price of Milk concert.
The performers this year range from mask dancers and tap-dancers to multi-instrumentalists and singers of all ages.
Organiser Dave Myall promotes The Price of Milk as an excellent opportunity for the Bay’s performers to get paid work while providing a great night of entertainment for what is sure to be another sell-out crowd. Here is a taste of what is in store:
The Black Spots are on the bill. This troupe of talented teens started good and got better. Their performance at the recent World on a Plate event caught the attention of a whole new audience.
People in the Bay have followed the career of Nikita Buys with plenty of interest and pride. Her latest achievement was making the finals of the Gold Guitars National Country Music Festival in Gore, where she was highly commended in two categories.
Daniel Lines is a rising star in Golden Bay. The winner of the youth section of the recent Bay Song will be appearing with fellow Collingwood Area School student Madison van Staden.
Daniel says he is a big fan of Jack White and that he is massively influenced by Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, Pete Doherty of Babyshambles, and Beck.
“I find inspiration in feelings and other music, the both of which are linked. If I’m sad, I listen to sad music and therefore write sombre songs. If I’m happy, I listen to music that’s happy and write happy songs. Pretty simple.”
Daniel will collaborate with Madison, who is attending Collingwood Area School instead of her earthquake-damaged school in Christchurch.
Other Bay Song prizewinners on the bill are Cathryn Tucker – appearing with partner Adge - and Levity Beet, appearing with partner Gabby.
Piano accordianists Kim Duff and Julia Muntwyller, guitarist/singer Bing Brabant and his troupe from Central Takaka School, and Black Billy and the Loose Leaf Tea round out the programme. There really will be something for everyone.
To further leaven the mix, a short film made in Golden Bay will also be shown.
The Price of Milk – Saturday 3 September at 7.30pm tickets at Paradise Entertainment.
